What Chiron, the wounded healer, teaches us about work and vocation.Because work is something that you do on a regular basis, it's represented by the sixth house, the house of habitual behaviors, service, co-workers, mentors, and mental and physical health (because your everyday habits profoundly affect your mental and physical health).Outside of needing to develop specific talents as a springboard to vocation, it's important that you identify a habitual approach, a particular environment, a way of relating to co-workers and customers which you are so drawn to that your work is something that you can truly love - day in and day out. Work is often experienced as either giving energy and well being as it should in any dream job, or wounding, as it can be in a toxic work environment. The ruler of the sixth house, its sign, placement, and aspects can identify an ideal work environment. A complicated sixth house, or stressed ruler of the sixth house can lead to repeated unpleasant work experiences. To understand this problems and to find the real meaning in your work, so as to turn your job into your dream job its helpful to understand the mythology of Chiron, for whom the asteroid Chiron, which rules Virgo and the sixth house was named.
Chiron, the centaur, holds the key to finding your dream job. In Greek mythology, Chiron, was a centaur, (a horse with the head and arms of a human), whose birth whose birth was the product of a rape. His father, Saturn, upon spotting the beautiful nymph, Philyra, fell instantly in lust. She was disgusted by him, and attempted to resist his advances by turning into a mare and fleeing. Saturn, however, turned into a stallion, and forced himself on her. When Chiron was born, his horse half reminded Philyra of the rape so much, that she abandoned him. Chiron was after birth effectively an orphan, and had the added handicap of knowing that his birth and conception was wounding to his mother. Fortunately, Chiron was adopted by Apollo, god of the Sun and also music, and healing, who taught him all he knew. He also studied with Athena, goddess of wisdom.
Chiron later because a teacher and mentor, to Jason, Hercules, and Achilles, and was revered for his devotion, wisdom and as a great healer. Later in life, Hercules, accidently shot him with an arrow, tipped with blood from the monster, Hydra. This wound could never heal. Chiron. blessed as a healer, could never heal his own wound,..... until he agreed to heal the wound of Prometheus. Prometheus, you may recall, was an unfortunate mortal, chained to a rock, whose liver was devoured by an eagle one day, healed itself the next day, and devoured by the eagle again the next day in an unending cycle. The only way that Prometheus could be relieved of his burden was if an immortal agree to give up his immortality. As son of Saturn, Chiron was immortal. He gave up his immortality, was healed of his wound, as was Prometheus, and lived to a healthy ripe old age, and died. Thus Chiron was known as the wounded healer, and the his message is that we heal best, by healing others first. How does this related to work? Chiron, the wounded healer, and finding your dream job. Very often your ideal work represents a hole in the soul, some missing element in your personality which you can best fill, by doing for others, or doing in some service capacity. Often this hole is revealed by some traumatic experience/s in childhood, which you then resolve in your work for others. It's important to note that while this lack is revealed to you by wounding experiences from others, essentially the issue is the lack of somthing in yourself. Giving what you lack to others is actually the easiest way to give it to yourself. Examples of the wounded healer in work and vocation:
Sometimes, too, your work may reveal the wound, or need to be healed in order for you to be able to work. There is an obvious connection with being healthy and fit, and being able to work. Likewise inappropriate work, or too much work can make you sick. This can play out in more subtle ways as well. Bill Clinton's, sixth house ruler is Neptune close conjunct Mars -this aspect is often associated with unclear sexual identity, an aspect of being seduced or seducing others. The Monica Lewinsky sex scandal wounded his career, and forced him to seek therapy to find the root cause for this behavior. Understanding the "hole in your soul" can prevent toxic and wounding work experiences which can prevent satisfaction even when people are in jobs consistent with their vocations. Combining your talents, (2nd house) with filling the hole in your soul, (sixth house) creates an ideal tension between being good at what you do, and being challenged by what you do, that leads to the feeling of flow as described by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in his book "Finding Flow". Flow is akin to peak experience, which is how you experience life when you are engaged in your everyday life as you will be when you make friends with the wounded healer in your chart, Chiron.
